Straight answers about smarter home energy.
Clear, realistic guidance before you make a property-specific decision.
Get your free quote →Do solar panels work in cloudy weather?
Yes. Solar panels generate electricity from daylight, although output changes with the weather, season, roof orientation, shading and system design.
Does a roof have to face south?
South-facing roofs often offer strong generation, but east-, west- and other suitable orientations may also work well. A property-specific design is needed rather than relying on a fixed percentage.
How do you decide how many panels are needed?
The design considers usable roof area, shading, electrical constraints, recent energy consumption, daytime demand and your plans for a battery, heat pump or electric vehicle.
Will solar panels work during a power cut?
A standard grid-connected system normally switches off during a power cut to protect network workers. Continued supply requires a compatible battery and backup system specifically designed for that purpose.
Can I install solar panels and a battery together?
Yes. They are often designed as one connected system, although a compatible battery can also be added to some existing solar installations after an assessment.
Can an EV charger use solar electricity?
Compatible systems can direct available surplus solar generation towards the vehicle. The amount varies, and grid electricity may still be needed.
Do solar panels need cleaning or maintenance?
Maintenance is generally limited, but panels should be visually checked and kept free from significant obstruction. Follow the manufacturer and installer guidance and use a competent professional for any work at height.
How long does installation take?
Timing depends on the roof, system size, access, scaffolding, electrical work and any remedial work. The confirmed programme will be included in the project plan rather than promised as a fixed one-day installation.
Do I need planning permission?
Many domestic installations may fall within permitted-development rules, but restrictions can apply to listed buildings, conservation areas, flats and particular designs. This must be checked for the property.
What is needed for the grid connection?
The installation partner must follow the relevant distribution-network process. Depending on the system, this may involve notification or approval before connection.
Can I be paid for electricity exported to the grid?
Potentially. Eligibility depends on your energy supplier, export tariff, meter and required installation documents. Export payments are not guaranteed by Zeco.
What documents should I receive?
The required handover pack depends on the project but may include the quotation and design, product information, electrical and commissioning records, warranties, network documents and operating guidance.
Is solar completely free to run?
Solar has no fuel cost, but ownership can still involve maintenance, insurance considerations, component replacement and electricity bought from the grid when generation is insufficient.
Which technology is right for my home?
It depends on the property, current energy use, budget and goals. Our first assessment helps identify the most suitable starting point.
Will I receive a fixed quote?
After the relevant property assessment, Zeco provides or coordinates a written proposal explaining the recommended system, assumptions, scope and price.
